The future of Frodsham Leisure Centre: Ward Councillor discusses new 'project group' idea

Cheshire West Ward Councillor for Frodsham, Lynn Riley, has shared her views on Council plans to develop a 'project group' to help deliver the new 'hub and spoke' sports provision model in Frodsham.

This decision was agreed during November's Cheshire West Cabinet meeting, where it was suggested that Frodsham Leisure Centre would continue to operate 'on a limited basis in the short term'.

A community meeting to establish this project group was initially planned for yesterday (Monday), but has now been postponed.

Speaking at last night's Frodsham Town Council, Cllr Riley said: "We did have quite robust representation from various people from Frodsham, and I would particularly like to thank the residents who are manning the petition at the moment.

"They did magnificently well in really getting the Cabinet to add a further recommendation that there will be some special consideration for Frodsham and Helsby, in our A56 corridor.

"We are going to see a local task group set up. At the last meeting of Cheshire West I did put a number of questions to the Leader of the Council asking for that working group to be chaired by the community, but that has been turned down.

"I think it is very important that Cheshire West goes into 'listening mode' and hears from the community round here just what we are doing and what we have been capable of.

"Certainly, when you look at the facilities that have been built in the WA6 postcode, Cheshire West has got more to learn than to teach to this community. So, I hope the Leader will reconsider that.

"I think it's essential that the ideas and input coming forward between now and May give everybody in our town and along the A56 the opportunity for an awful lot of conversation.

"We've been a 'tier two' consideration for a very long time now, and the consultation on the Brio feedback let people know just how angry and disappointed and let down we feel round here.

"We very much want to see some sizeable investment in our local infrastructure made and I am also very keen that we cover the all important consideration: who is actually best to operate those facilities?

"I'm more convinced than ever that some sort of community sports trust is our best option going forward."
