Helsby Hill then and now

Let's play 'spot the difference' with these two views from Helsby Hill, one dating from 1968, the other from 2020.
On first glance, it doesn't seem like much has altered in the intervening 52 years: in both pictures you can pick out Helsby Methodist Church, Station and the shops along Chester Road.
Many of the older houses remain largely unchanged, although lots of news ones have come to join them, and beyond the railway line there are still green fields and farmland.
Both pictures offer a clear view of Ince's CF Fertilisers manufacturing site, which was opened in 1965. This factory produces one million tonnes of fertiliser per year and employs 400 people.
In the distance, you can also make out Stanlow Oil Refinery, whose history dates back to 1924.
So far, nothing too drastic appears to have changed over the last 50 years. However, as you can see from the left-hand side of the earlier picture, in 1968, the M56 motorway was only just being built, suggesting that Helsby would have felt and sounded quite different. Another clearly visible difference in the 1968 photo is the commanding presence of the four 250 ft cooling towers over at Ince A Power Station, which was opened in 1957. One by one, these cooling towers were demolished over the course of the 1980s and 1990s. Finally, in the far right-hand corner of the later photo, you can see a Frodsham Wind Farm turbine, which became operational in 2017. In the 1960s, British onshore wind farms were still a long way from becoming a reality, and so this modern feature of the landscape would likely have been the last thing on residents' minds as they imagined a future vision of Helsby and Frodsham! What other changes can you see?
