The days are getting longer, the weather's getting warmer (sort of) the bumblebees are buzzing about and the sound of birdsong is in the air. Spring is here!
As the natural world awakens and emerges from its winter hibernation, the signs of the season are all around us. Our green spaces, gardens and hedgerows are bursting into colour, just what we need to lift our spirits after the long winter on lockdown.
One of the signs of spring to look out for is woodland wildflowers which are popping up across a number of our green spaces. Hob Hey Wood Friends Group volunteer, Mark O'Sullivan, has put together a virtual tour of some of the wildflowers that can be found in our wooded areas to help with some exploration inspiration.
In his tour, Mark explains when and where you might be able to spot the beautiful wildflowers growing near you, from celandines to wood sorrel to red campion.
Mark says, "We're very lucky to live in an area with so many green spaces, to see the many wonderful sights wrought by the change of season. I enjoyed visiting some of our green spaces to see what was growing; a fantastic excuse to get out again!"
Spending time in nature has been scientifically proven to improve our health and wellbeing. Exploring the green spaces gives us a chance to get outside, get moving and socialise safely (within government guidelines), as well as taking time to slow down, unwind and take notice of the incredible ecosystems that are all around us.
Sian Day from Frodsham Root Network says, "Appreciating the nature on our doorstep, at our local green spaces or even just looking out the window, is a great way to improve wellbeing. This spring we'd love to see what you discover, so share your pictures and we will use them to create a map of Frodsham in bloom."
Share your pictures of woodland wildflowers or any other signs of spring by tagging Frodsham Root Network on social media @frodshamroots, use #springinfrodsham or email them to [email protected] - don't forget to say where your picture is taken!
