This week, for the national Armistice Day commemorations, we thought about those who fell during both World Wars.
The 105 First World War and 34 Second World War soldiers from Frodsham that were killed or missing in these conflicts are remembered on Frodsham Hill War Memorial.
These men, who served in the army, navy and air force, fought across Europe and North Africa, and are buried in French, Italian, Belgian, German, Tunisian and Iraqi cemeteries, as well as Frodsham and Helsby's churchyards.
While these brave servicemen were stationed overseas, individuals and organisations much closer to home were also fighting to lead Britain to victory.
Frodsham and District History Society archives contain several photos from the Auxiliary Military Hospital which was established in the town during the First World War.
This was located in the roller skating rink that had been built on the top of Frodsham Hill, which was reworked to care for injured soldiers returning from war.
Run predominantly by volunteers and with the help of donations from local people and businesses, the hospital treated over 3,000 patients, including overseas soldiers, during the conflict.
One of the volunteer nurses was called Mabel Earp, a trained artist who kept a notebook full of sketches, letters and musings written by her and the soldiers she looked after.
The contents of these notebooks give a sense of the lived experience of this time, as they revive voices both from the home front and the trenches, and reveal their stories.
Mabel went on to marry ex-soldier George Bertram Leach in February 1918, but it is not known whether he was also one of her patients.

In the Second World War, Frodsham residents stepped up once again to contribute to the war effort. From 1939-45, Frodsham Fire Brigade was manned – or should I say, womanned – by an all-female crew from the Land Army. These fire fighters took part in, and won, a national pump competition!
