REWIND: Do you remember the old Kydd & Kydd factory?

Do any of you see a grandmother or great-grandmother in this photo from 1910?

These crisply aproned ladies, posing solemnly for the camera, are staff from the old Kydd & Kydd Jam Factory, which was built in the 1890s at the top of Sandfields.

Kydd & Kydd was initially one of J.G. Kydd's enterprises, which also included a 'grocers and provision merchants' on Church Street, located in what is now Kash 22.

The factory was eventually demolished in around 1973, but J.G. Kydd's presence is still felt in the form of Kydds Wint, which runs between Church Street and Alvanley Terrace.

The boxes of fruit preserves that the ladies hold in their hands might all be long gone now, but a surviving example of a Kydd & Kydd package can be found at Erddig Hall in Wrexham.

This slightly battered cardboard box once contained a collection of 'delicious table jellies, a great delicacy in assorted flavours' all for just one penny! If only we could still taste what they were like...

Frodsham and District History Archive does still possess a Kydd & Kydd jar, but, alas, it is empty.
