The Bears Paw pub have submitted an application to make alterations to their beer garden

Frodsham Town Council Planning Committee has reacted positively to a planning application to 'upgrade' the Bears Paw pub beer garden in order to make it comfortable for customers no matter the weather.

To this end, the application proposes the construction of timber pergolas in the cobbled and patio areas to the rear of the pub, as well as the replacement of the existing tarmac drinking area with a resin finish.

The pergolas would be covered with a Perspex roof, and feature 'decorative festoons', fixed lighting and electrical heaters.

So as not to detract from the appearance of the Bears Paw's Grade II Listed, seventeenth-century façade, the pergolas would be built away from the pub building, and only to the height of its guttering.

Planters will also be installed around seating areas to the side of the pub building, to help screen the space from cars.

A Heritage Impact Assessment connected with the application stated: "The proposals aim to establish the premises as a successful and sustainable community facility for the long term whilst maintaining the character of the building and its context.

"It is considered that the proposals do not adversely affect preservation or the setting of the premises and will retain its key features, whilst bringing into use and enhancing the disused areas."

At a FTC Planning Committee Meeting last night (Monday 15 March), Councillors spoke in favour of the application, with Cllr Phil Griffiths saying: "I think they're taking advantage of the fact that they need to extend their outside service area, especially in light of recent events.

"Looking at the plans […] they're just tidying it up; it's probably due a refurbishment anyway."

Cllr Bernie Wade added: "I don't think there is a problem with it at all. I think it is just going to enhance the pub."

The Committee had no objections to the proposal, which will now await a final decision from Cheshire West and Chester Council.
