For many parents, the return of lockdown has also meant the return of that dreaded juggling act: home schooling.

This can bring with it a huge amount of pressure, and so we thought we'd enlist the help of an expert in the field, to share some advice on keeping learning fun and relaxed.

We asked a local Maths tutor, Charlie Green, if he had any tips Frodsham's parents turned teachers.

Charlie is a Mathematics PhD student, and has been tutoring children of all levels, from primary to A-level, for over four years.

"My advice for home tutoring would be to remember that you don't need to be able to answer your child's questions immediately," he begins.

"It's OK to go away to research a question, and come back when you have more knowledge. It's much better to be able to pass it on well, rather than blustering.

"Many times a child will not understand a topic at the first attempt," he adds. "Be prepared to change your tack and try a different approach.

"Especially in maths, there is usually more than one way to achieve the same goal."

"If your child is struggling with the topic you have planned, it's often better to move away to another subject for a while, then go back to the original topic later.

"This will give the child a chance to think about it more, and you will often find it sinks in better at the second attempt.

Charlie also suggests that a good way to make a lesson interesting is to "get your child to teach you a topic."

This role reversal gives them a break from listening all the time, and allows them to unravel any complicated concepts by thinking aloud.

"Both of you can do your research, and it will help you to know that they understand the topic at hand well," Charlie adds.

"Most of all: relax and try to make lessons fun!"

Charlie concludes by stressing the importance of something which is often overlooked: praising good work and celebrating every little achievement, so as to keep your child feeling positive and motivated.

While coronavirus restrictions are in force, Charlie will be offering one-to-one lessons over Zoom.

Once it is safe to do so, he hopes to resume in-person sessions in the comfort of his clients' homes.

You can find out more about Charlie and his tutoring on his Facebook page or his website.
