Rail services from Frodsham station might soon be benefitting from a series of improvement schemes proposed by local authority leaders across North Wales, Cheshire West and the Wirral.
As part of the Growth Track 360 Alliance, which brings together councils and business organisations across the borderlands region, local leaders are seeking £20 million in seedcorn funding from the Chancellor of the Exchequer in next week's Spending Review, to develop three rail projects.
The first of these projects - North Wales Coast Mainline: Expanding Overseas and British Tourism Sustainably in an Area of Extraordinary Beauty - would see the number of trains between the North Wales coastline and Manchester doubled.
This would mean that Frodsham and Helsby residents would have twice the access to services terminating in Manchester or in Holyhead.
Another project would increase the number of services available between North Wales and Liverpool via the recently redeveloped Halton Curve, which lies between Frodsham and Runcorn.
The rail improvement proposal also suggested that the new Halton Curve line might pave the way for a direct service between South Wales and Liverpool, passing through Frodsham and Helsby.
The final project, Chester Station Modernisation, is in the process of improving the speed and capacity of rail services from the city, so reinforcing its position as a gateway to Wales, Liverpool, Manchester and London.
Writing to Rishi Sunak MP on behalf of the Growth Track 360 Alliance, its Chair – Cheshire West leader, Cllr Louise Gittins – and Vice Chair – Cllr Ian Roberts, Leader of Flintshire Council – urged the Chancellor to "seize the opportunity to strengthen the Union, generate inclusive economic growth, promote sustainable transport and reduce carbon emissions by making modest seedcorn investments in three well-developed cross-border rail modernisation schemes in North Wales, the Wirral and Cheshire."
