Mike Amesbury has urged Council chiefs to ensure the future of Frodsham Leisure Centre when they meet on Wednesday.
More than 300 people from Frodsham responded to the recent 'Shaping the Future' consultation on the future of the borough's Brio leisure and sport provision. That's more people than any other part of the Cheshire West and Chester area.
Of those who responded, a large majority strongly disagreed with the proposals.
The Weaver Vale MP has already spoken to the leader and chief executive of Cheshire West and Chester Council and stated his opposition to any proposals which could result in the existing leisure centre's closure.
Mike said: "Let me be absolutely clear – I'm strongly opposed to any attempted plans that would see the closure of this valued leisure centre and disinvest from the Frodsham and Helsby communities.
"The centre has fallen into disrepair over a period of decades. As time has gone by, in no small part due to massive cuts to council funding by successive Tory governments, that backlog of repairs and upgrades has got bigger and the bill more expensive.
"But closing the centre must not be seen as an easy way out. This should be a centrepiece of Frodsham and Helsby and our community deserves first class leisure, community and library facilities, which are more important than ever as we respond to this health and economic crisis."
A recent Freedom of Information request from Frodsham Nub News to Cheshire West Council found that last year, the Leisure Centre brought in £416,436 in public charges for its activities and spaces, an increase of approximately £30,000 on the previous 12-month period.
In 2019/20, the facility cost the Council £52,961 to maintain, as compared to £47,133 the year before.
