Match Report: Helsby First Team lose 0-1 against league leaders Runcorn Sports

A huge game yesterday at Helsby FC: Helsby's First Team entertained league leaders Runcorn Sports, who were six points ahead. However, second-placed Helsby had three games in hand - a title game if ever there was one and also a local derby to add to the spice of the occasion.

The conditions were horrendous when the game kicked off - monsoon-like at times with heavy rain and storms circulating in the air.

Helsby were with the wind and adapted quicker with Nathan having a couple of shots. Then, a defensive error by the keeper saw Helsby shoot into an empty goal but just wide.

If anything Helsby were struggling having the "advantage" of the wind but then on 40 minutes the ball came over the top to the Runcorn player who nicked it past the advancing keeper Dylan, who created the slightest contact by dragging his leg .

The referee awarded a penalty and Runcorn scored.

It was 0-1 to Runcorn at half time, but then I noticed the Helsby bench warming up - it was a strong team to put on and I had a theory that Helsby will play better against the wind with the ball to feet and more intricate play.

If anything the conditions got worse - almost biblical at times - and then Lee and Tom T were put on with 35 minutes to go.

It immediately felt like a big game, with frantic tackling and Helsby in with a chance of getting a goal back.

Then, sadly, Helsby went down to 10 men for 10 minutes after talking back to the referee. It was another up hill challenge but then came another half chance with a looping shot from Connor.

The keeper tipped the ball over the bar but Helsby continued to work hard and with the last kick of the game hit the side netting.

Final Score: Helsby FC 0 Runcorn Sports 1.

A huge game sadly spoiled by the horrendous conditions. However, well done to Runcorn on the win - even in defeat its great to see live football again at grass roots level and played at Helsby FC.

The future is bright the future is green!
