Cheshire West and Chester Council has applied to extend the planning permission for Frodsham Recycling Centre for a further two years.
The Recycling Centre site has been operating under temporary planning permission for 30 years, but the Council's current authorisation to remain on the site expires on August 22.
The Council is due to carry out a "detailed review" of the Centre site, to ensure that it is "efficient, fit for purpose and able to support key strategic priorities."
However, the Cheshire West says that the Covid-19 pandemic has delayed the beginning of this process, and is seeking a two year extension to the current planning permission to allow more time to consider a "long-term solution" for the tip.
This will contribute to a wider review of the borough's recycling centres, conducted as part of Cheshire West's new Waste Management Strategy, which will be put to full Council in July.
If the proposals are approved, an independent consultant will be appointed to look into an "alternative site" for Frodsham tip.
Several options around Frodsham, including Mill Lane and Weaver Park Industrial Estate, have already been considered, but the Council says that this search will now "continue in line with the provisions of the Waste Strategy."
The contract with HW Martin for the management of all Cheshire West household waste recycling centres, including Frodsham, expires in 2023.
