Frodsham's ward councillors have responded to a statement made by local MP Mike Amesbury on the future of the town's recycling centre.

Cllrs Lynn Riley and Chris Basey recently recorded a video raising concerns over the future of the site, noting that Cheshire West and Chester Council has not made any application to keep the tip open once its planning consent expires in August.

Mr Amesbury said that he had been in touch with Council Chief Executive Andrew Lewis and Deputy Leader Cllr Karen Shore, and that: "Both have assured me planning permission for the site will again be extended and there is no issue."

"It's my understanding ward members were involved in the decision to extend, as the current permission expires in August," he continued.

Cllr Riley welcomed Mr Amesbury's involvement, but added: "his comment that he has been given assurances by the Chief Executive and Deputy Leader is just not good enough.

"The decision for this lies not with the Chief Executive and Cabinet, but with the full Council, that doesn't meet again until 15 July.

"Cheshire West and Chester has yet to make a planning application to itself to extend the permission for the tip and it begs the question why this hasn't already happened.

"The warm words of the Council will provide little reassurance to local people until it is backed up with something concrete."

Cllr Basey added: "All Cheshire West Council has to do is to make an application to extend the lease, to give us some breathing room, and then work with us to find a better site for the tip here in Frodsham.

"That is all we are asking for. But until an application is made, and especially on the back of the Waste Strategy Report published last week, we have to assume that the future of our tip is anything but certain in the long term.

"I'm new to the role and can't find any new site identified in the Local Plan, so I'm assuming that the council is just at the start of the search for a new home for this much valued facility."
