This weekend, Hob Hey Wood Friends Group planted a new generation of trees in Frodsham's ancient woodland.
On Sunday (6th December), the last day of National Tree Week, the Group planted 210 trees, which were given to them by the Woodland Trust.
To comply with the rule of six, the day was split into two sessions. "Both sessions were fully booked, with existing Hob Hey Wood Friends Group members and quite a few new faces, keen to get stuck in planting trees in Hob Hey," said Chairman Mark O'Sullivan.
"We got to plant several different types: the blackthorn, hawthorn, and hazel were used to build living hedges at boundaries near the main bridge, whilst the oak, rowan, and silver birch were planted in an area previously cleared of invasive sycamore.
"These trees, all native, will enhance the biodiversity of the wood, provide shelter and food for the wildlife that lives there, and give a splash of colour with their fruits in autumn."
The saplings were covered with plastic spirals to help protect them from squirrels and rabbits looking for a snack. According to Mark, these spirals also create a microclimate, which keeps the trees warm in winter.
"We managed to get all 210 trees planted in the two sessions giving everyone a chance to plant some. Those who planted them will see them grow over the years becoming tall, sturdy denizens of the woodland, given a helping hand at the start of their life by humans.
"I think everyone enjoyed the day; I know I did! It was great to see other group members and meet so many new faces, talk about the wood, and see the final result with those rows of spirals covering the ground.
"Thank you to all the volunteers who turned out today and we hope to see you at future volunteer mornings."
Hob Hey Wood Friends are now planning to plant more trees in 2021, so don't worry if you missed out on a place at the sessions this weekend!
