On Saturday (8 May), Helsby FC entertained Sutton Athletic FC in the quarter final of the West Cheshire Shield Cup.

The game was epic - it literally had everything.

The rain had subsided but the pitch was still wet and greasy. The game kicked off and really didn't get going - lots of niggles and shouting but no real exciting football.

The game was 0-0 at half time but within a minute, Jack struck the post. However, this just seemed to stir Sutton who slotted the ball home with an easy shot.

Just moments later, a corner and a flick on and a second goal was poked home by Sutton: the players and staff were running all over the pitch rejoicing. H

Helsby looked really down, but then came a double substitution and 30 minutes to go.... could this change things?

Nathan went into the box and was grappled to the ground but nothing given.

I was convinced it was a penalty but this action seemed to flick a switch in the Helsby team and you could feel and sense that the match was not over - not over by a long way.

A cross from the left saw the keeper flap at the ball as Jack crashed it into the roof of the net - it was game on.

Then came attack after attack by Helsby. Tom then jinked into the box and was clearly felled with his ankle bent in a tackle by the Sutton defender, but again nothing given.

Pressure was mounting with every Helsby attack and Lee T got the ball on the left cutting it in past the stationary Sutton keeper.

Helsby were now drawing 2-2 with 5 minutes remaining. The noise was electric - so much tension and belief in the air.

Then Lee T, on the far left wing again, ran at Sutton and, stretching with every sinew, shot and scored.

The Helsby contingent were joyous, with players and staff running and jumping on each other. I was jumping and running about myself it was an amazing feeling.

The referee announced that there was "less than a minute to go" and then came the final whistle, with Helsby going through to the semi-finals.

An amazing day and I simply can't wait for this "Colosseum of Confrontation" to be full of Helsby FC supporters in the very near future.

These are truly exciting times - the future is bright the future is green!!
