Helsby FC Reserves were away against Chester Nomads this Saturday (3rd), drawing 2-2.
Braving the miserable weather conditions, Helsby started well, making three half chances. However, with the rain growing heavier by the minute, both teams began to struggle, neither managing to make much headway.
Suddenly Kostas danced around the opposition's defence and hit the bar. This strike seemed to spur the Nomads on and in the 42nd minute, Helsby's goalkeeper made his first save.
From the resulting corner, the Nomads were able to tap the ball in from the back post, making the score 1-0 at half time.
Helsby came into the second half sharper and more determined. Within 10 minutes, a penalty from Kostas and what Duncan Cowley described as a "sublime strike" from Graham Search, the Green Army were winning 2-1.
Helsby gained in confidence and rhythm, and No. 11 Jack Hutton-Clarke was giving the Nomads a run for their money with his quick pace and direct play.
Helsby were making chance after chance when, with seconds remaining, the Nomads took one last run at the Helsby defence. A locking of arms saw a Nomad player "fly" into the air and a controversial penalty was awarded.
Disappointingly for the Green Army, this last-minute development saw the game end 2-2.
"That's football for you," Duncan said. "It can be very very cruel at times. We just need to dust ourselves down - or dry ourselves off - for the next game!"
