Frodsham Town Council used their reserves to make a reduction in the precept request for 2021/22

Frodsham Town Council has approved its budgets for the coming year (2021/22), agreeing a more than 20 per cent reduction in residents' precept payment.

The precept is the yearly sum requested by the Town Council to help it meet its spending requirements. It is then converted into an amount per council tax band and collected by the borough council as part of your council tax bill.

Having saved money on outgoings such as community events, play areas and elections during the pandemic, the Town Council's precept request had already fallen by 10 per cent on this year's figure.

However, during Monday's Council Budget Setting, Cllr Ryan Mckeown said: "I'm really happy that we've passed on a saving of 10 per cent, but I would like to see more.

"It's been a tough year where furloughed workers – a lot of the country – have been managing on 80 per cent [of their wages].

"I was wondering, with us having such healthy reserves, if we could take some of that to get that precept down further.

"I think it would show that we are all in it together and that we are taking people's financial situations into account."

The Council approved this idea unanimously, so reducing the precept element of residents' council tax bills for 2021/22 by 23 per cent.

For a Band D property, this means a saving of around £15, as the yearly precept payment shrinks from £62 to £47.55.
