Weaver Vale MP Mike Amesbury has congratulated Frodsham campaigners for winning their fight to secure the future of a green space.

Long-standing plans to sell off Green Gates Park in Ship Street for housing have finally been shelved thanks to a residents-led crusade.

Instead, Frodsham Town Council will now work alongside Green Gates Community Project to redevelop the amenity for young and old.

Mr Amesbury said: "This a great win for the community so well done to the tireless campaigners who refused to give up on their ambition.

"I was proud to support their desire to create a wonderful green space where elderly people can relax, a place for local families to go and for children to play.

"I know there was a plan to sell off Green Gates for housing and as Shadow Housing Minister I'm keen on getting affordable housing in communities such as Frodsham and right across Weaver Vale.

"But green spaces are also important. They are the heart and lungs of our community."

Mr Amesbury is now backing funding applications by Green Gates Community Project as there are plans to reinstate play equipment, lay paths and carry out landscaping.

Town councillor Cllr Lucy Sumner, who is also a member of the project, is "delighted" the future of the park has been secured within her Waterside ward.

The mother-of-two said: "We will be working in collaboration with Frodsham Town Council to find the best way of reinstating the park and making it suitable for the needs of the young and the elderly."

She added: "Mike has been great. He has been very supportive and offered his help and advice when needed."
