Frodsham Town Council has agreed to appoint Cllr Phil Griffiths as its representative on the new project group tasked with drafting options for the future of Frodsham Leisure Centre.

Local residents and organisations were invited to join this working group during a community meeting led by Cheshire West and Chester Council on Monday 15 February.

The meeting centred largely on the work of other local sports facilities and groups rather than on Frodsham Leisure Centre itself, and Town Councillors criticised what some perceived to be a "total lack of enthusiasm" for the town.

During Monday's Policy, Process and Revenue Committee meeting, Cllr Donna Critchley described this introductory project group discussion as being "very disappointing."

Cllr Bill Stockton added: "I thought that that meeting was terribly disappointing and disheartening. The presentation didn't give any ideas of what they were going to do for us or how much funding they were going to assist with. It didn't tell us anything at all.

"That was meeting was a showcase; it was nothing to do with getting something done."

Cllr Griffiths continued: "We all know that the Brio centre we've got is just not fit for purpose. What I'd like to see if they knocked the whole thing down would be the building of a pool, a decent gym, a library and somewhere for Frodsham Town Council.

"It was a smoke and mirrors exercise. What they didn't want to say is that they don't know what to do with the Frodsham Brio [facility]."

Cllr Judith Critchley agreed, concluding: "I think we should at least force them to keep some facilities there for us. We don't want to lose the library or the Will to Work."

It was then decided that, as Chair Council's Amenities Committee, Cllr Griffiths should act provisionally as FTC's spokesperson on the project group for future provision of leisure, health and wellbeing and library services in Frodsham.

If the Committee welcomes new members after the May by-elections, a different Councillor may then take over the role.
