Up Close in Frodsham: Browsers Bazaar

With its paintings, ornaments and furniture items, vintage clothes, toys and books, Browsers Bazaar, the Lady Heyes bric-a-brac and antiques shop, has it all.

The many thousands of pieces in this Mary Poppins bag of objects old and new will have you exploring for hours as you sift through its layers of history and design.

While one minute you might be looking at an old £1 note, the next your eyes will be drawn to a model car, a novelty salt and pepper shaker collection, or even a Lord of the Rings figurine!

"Our stock is a mixture of all sorts really," says Browsers Bazaar's manager, Gill Taylor.

"It ranges from traditional antiques to handmade cards, knitted baby clothing, small badges and teddy bears."

In keeping with the times, there are also patterned facemasks on sale for anyone who needs them.

"It changes so often because people are bringing different things in all the time. We never know what's going to come through the door next, which makes it interesting!" Gill adds.

"It's such an eclectic mix."

This is partly because the Bazaar is run by a group of different unit holders, who all acquire their own stock and take it in turns to man the till.

"It's like a cooperative really. So that's nice from a social point of view, and when you're on duty in the shop you get to know your customers quite well," Gill explains.

Most of the unit holders buy in second hand items to sell, which, Gill points out, helps to save them from the landfill through "recycling and up-cycling."

However, there are also hand-made products available, including Jonezies Pins & Needles' dinky knitted baby clothes.

"A bit of a magpie"

Although Gill worked previously in the travel industry, she has always had a keen interest in antiques and collectables.

"I'm a bit of a magpie, I think," she says. "I started collecting stamps, coins and pottery when I was a child, and it just evolved from there."

Her passion eventually became a business venture, when Browsers Bazaar opened in 2016, growing from just one initial unit.

Now, her and her fellow sellers are constantly on the lookout for new stock, attending auctions and house clearances as well as buying items from customers on site.

"We're always busy out and about, looking for stuff," Gill says.

"If you get hold of something you haven't seen before, it's interesting researching it and finding out what it's for."

"And you find that the items on sale bring back people's memories. They might say: "Oh, my Gran used to have one of those," or "I had one of those as a child!"

This year's coronavirus lockdown, and its forced postponement of all business and social interaction, was a difficult time for the unit holders, who were also worried that their reopening would see a drop in footfall.

"But," Gill says, "the regular customers are all coming back in as well as new people. It's good because the building is large and spacious and I think people feel quite safe," even as restrictions begin to tighten again.

So, if you are looking to buy or sell something, why not pop into the shop to have a look round?
