Frodsham Town Council is to write to Cheshire West and Chester Council to express its opposition to plans to close Frodsham Leisure Centre.

In a consultation document launched by Cheshire West over the future of the Leisure Centre, local provider, Brio, deemed the facility 'not fit for purpose'.

'Plans to provide a sustainable health, leisure, wellbeing and library service to the Frodsham/Helsby area would be developed, maximising the use of community facilities and external funding opportunities,' it continued.

'Community-based activity sessions could be delivered in identified areas in Frodsham/ Helsby using local facilities, green spaces and other options to provide activities at a more local level. This could include a fitness class being delivered in the community.'

In yesterday's Amenities Committee meeting, Frodsham Town Councillors railed against the potential loss of the centre, which could also lead to the closure of Frodsham Library.

Cllr Lucy Sumner said: "[Frodsham Leisure Centre] needs money spending on it. It's not overly fit for purpose the way it is but it doesn't mean that they should get rid of it and leave us with nothing."

Cllr Mallie Poulton expressed fears, however, that Cheshire West and Chester had: "already signed a death warrant on it."

Cllr Phil Griffiths concluded: "I think we should respond as a Council, as strongly as we can."

If Brio does decide to close the Leisure Centre, it is thought that the activities and events which normally take place there will be moved to Helsby Community Sports Club's new clubhouse, which sits three miles away from Frodsham's Princeway facility.

You can also have your say in this consultation by completing the online survey, or by emailing [email protected]. Paper copies of the survey can be requested by ringing 01244 478 590.

Brio's finalised proposals for the future of its Cheshire services, including Frodsham Leisure Centre, will be discussed in a Cheshire West and Chester Council Cabinet meeting in November.
