Cheshire West bin collection changes: Frodsham residents share their thoughts on the proposals ahead of Council decision

Tomorrow (Tuesday 27 July), Cheshire West and Chester Council will hold a meeting to rule on its new Waste Management Strategy.

If approved, the plan would see an additional charge of £40 per annum introduced for garden waste collections, while recycling and household waste would be collected every two weeks as normal.

The Council has said that households with enough space will also be provided with larger bins to replace the current boxes, meaning that they will be separating their waste between four different wheelie bins.

Ahead of the Council vote on the proposals, Frodsham Nub News has heard from a Kingsley Green resident and committee member about the planned changes.

"The proposals for managing household waste might work for the council, but do they really work for communities like ours?' he asked.

"Moving from two bins and two boxes to four bins with two new blue wheeled bins for recycling is a massive change. I don't know where we are going to put them and it means we will have to re-design our bin storage at Kingsley Green.

"We have the space and will have to make it work at our own expense," he added, "but not everyone can afford this extra charge, especially people on low and fixed incomes.

"There are many parts of Frodsham where households will struggle to find spaces for two additional bins.

"Roads like Townfield Lane, Marsh Lane, Princeway or on Chester Road by the old Cheshire Cheese are going to struggle I think. Just think how hard it's going to be to move around on bin day when the pavements are literally full of bins."

In our latest Frodsham Nub Voice, other residents also expressed concerns about the terms of Cheshire West's new Waste Management Strategy, with one commenting that the introduction of the discretionary green bin collection charge would "increase the amount of fly tipping in this area."

"We pay enough council tax now for very few services so another £40 is ridiculous for a more reduced service," added another person.

"I think the way it's been described is a Hobson's choice: there is no option to stay the same," said another Nub Voice respondent who then added: "I'm not bothered about charging for green waste as not everyone has green waste and it's only £40, as long as the money saved makes it easier for people to dispose of other rubbish."

Other local residents shared this attitude towards the extra fee, with one saying that "I think that this is a viable way of tackling budgetary pressures on the Council."

Another suggested that: "It was inevitable. With central government cutting funding to county councils, and the rise in social care costs, county councils have nowhere to turn to but rate payers to fill the gap."

Finally, one person pointed out that other local authorities already charge for garden waste collections, stating: "I have spoken to other people who pay for their green waste to be removed so have no issue with that."

However, "I do object to the number of bins they are proposing. It should be like Cheshire East with just one bin for recycled [materials]."
