Today, on Remembrance Sunday, we think about those who gave their lives during the two World Wars and more recent conflicts.
Frodsham War Memorial bears the names of the 105 soldiers who were killed or missing in the First World War, along with over 30 others who were lost during World War Two.
These men, who served in the army, navy and air force, fought across Europe and North Africa, and are buried in French, Italian, Belgian, German, Tunisian and Iraqi cemeteries, as well as Frodsham and Helsby's churchyards.
You can find out more about their stories on the Cheshire Roll of Honour, an informative and thoughtful resource set up by Stephen Benson to honour the people behind the memorialised names.
Frodsham and Helsby remember
This year, we have had to mark Remembrance Sunday differently, but that has not stopped the people of Frodsham from making moving and contemplative tributes to those who fell during war. In a pre-recorded service from St Laurence Church in Frodsham, the Rev Elaine Atack led an act of remembrance, complete with hymns, prayers and readings. "As we remember today the slaughter and sacrifice of war, the horror, the heroism, the fear and despair, the pain and the heartbreak, help us to appreciate more fully the price paid and the debt we owe to so many," the Rev Elaine prayed. "In a world still broken, may we strive for peace, working towards healing and harmony in all that we do." The service is available on the St Laurence Church website Any organisation wishing to lay a wreath at the War Memorial in St Laurence churchyard is invited to do so after 12pm today (Sunday 8th November) or any time on Wednesday 11th November. Please comply with current social distancing rules. Frodsham Methodist Church have also prepared a video service on YouTube, which is available to view here. The Frodsham Branch of the Royal British Legion would like to thank local lady, Brenda Jones, who has raised £50 for the Poppy Appeal by making facemasks for family and friends in return for a small donation. Davyd Michell will also be playing The Last Post at various locations around Frodsham this afternoon. He asks that people do not gather to listen to him, but rather observe from their own gardens and doorways. Click here for more details. Meanwhile, in Helsby, sculptor, Sarah Gallagher-Hayes, created a beautiful willow soldier, standing in quiet contemplation in St Paul's churchyard. Crowned with a poppy garland, he adds an acute poignancy to this year's socially-distanced commemorations. Helsby Concert Band have also shared a recording of 'Abide with Me', which you can listen to on their Facebook page.
