Weekend Walks: Frodsham Marsh

By The Editor   27th Feb 2021

On an unexpectedly mild morning last weekend, Frodsham Nub News took a walk around Frodsham Marshes.

Beginning on Marsh Lane and walking over the motorway bridge, we kept to the left along Moorditch Lane, enjoying the quick red and yellow flash of a pair of busy goldfinches darting through the hedgerows.

At the first opportunity, we veered off to the right up a narrow track by No.6 Tank, which led us onto a straight path with great views over to the Mersey Estuary.

Here we saw Canada geese, lapwings, teals and coots and a shovelers.

Having reached the far edge of No.6 tank, we turned left and left again to start back towards Frodsham town along Lordship Lane.

To our left, we watched the criss-cross of two stonechats, plaiting the air with their flight.

To our right, the sun like a pearl under the thinning cloud and the grasses rustling in the breeze felt like the first stirrings of spring.

Reaching a point where the track forked into three, we crossed back over the motorway via Hare's Lane, where a kestrel was hovering...hovering...and diving for its prey.

You can find a map of the Marshes, as well as a birding checklist, on Bill Morton's Frodsham Marsh Bird Blog, or by following him on Twitter @frodshambirder

here, you will also find a more detailed guide to walking on the Marsh, with bird-spotting tips along the way.
